It started with a Chocolate Covered Oreo

Hi! I'm Jennifer Valo, owner of The Next Sweet Thing Bakery. Baking has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl and my parents gave me an Easy-Bake-Oven. Growing up, I was always happy to make cakes for friends' birthdays or just for fun. I worked at a bakery in high school, then studied Culinary Arts at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, MI (one of the BEST programs in the country if you are interested in studying Culinary Arts).

Throughout the years I would always make Christmas cookies for friends and family. Chocolate covered Oreo cookies were some of my favorite to make. During Christmas of 2012, I accidentally came up with the idea to turn the chocolate covered Oreo into a reindeer (pictured above). I thought it was the cutest thing! I wanted a whole cast of Christmas characters playfully created out of different colors of chocolate. Soon the set was complete with Santa, an Elf and a Snowman.

I didn't want to only make these chocolate covered Oreo cookies for friends around the holidays anymore, I wanted to go into business! I called my mom, Luanne, and we started planning. Over the course of a year of baking from home, The Next Sweet Thing was taking shape. Almost one year after accidentally making that reindeer we found an adorable little bakery for sale in Sylvania which was a location we had been dreaming of. We opened on January 20, 2014 and the rest is sweet history. We are making MUCH more than chocolate covered Oreo cookies (don't worry, we are still making those, too)! Throughout the years the designs may have and will continue to change but they are still so darned cute!

We now carry a wide variety of both cake and raised donuts, which are wonderfully made by my dad, John. You will also want to try our ready made cakes, cake pops, cupcakes and delicious frosted sugar cookies. We even recently expanded with a new seating area, perfect for serving some new dessert items and its also a great space for birthday parties and classes! We hope you will visit The Next Sweet Thing and let us make your day sweeter.

Sweetly signed,
